Worlds Most Interesting Furniture

A collection of the most interesting furniture from around the world. Featuring interesting designs and different interpretations of what furniture should be.

1. The Heatherwick Spun Chair

Causing quite a stir at its launch at the Milan Salone in 2010, Spun is made from rotational moulded polyethylene and as such is suitable for outdoor use. A single profile rotated around 360 degrees Heatherwick has created a wholly new concept of the chair.

2. Splinterworks Hammock Bath

The Splinterworks hammock bath made from black carbon. Features a combination of strong lines and sculptural forms. The ergonomic shape and variable depth of the baths means they use less water than a standard bath, despite their generous and elegant proportions.

 3. Loveseat

By definition, a loveseat is any type of chair with two seats. Today’s loveseat has the look of a small sofa and seats two people comfortably. Whether you’re short on space, looking to add seating to a less common area such as the bedroom, or wanting to compliment another larger sofa, the loveseat is a popular and practical piece of furniture.

With a name as charming as a loveseat, it’s hard to believe that the origin does not come from love and romance. In fact, the seat was initially designed in the 17th century with the purpose of helping individuals, not couples. These individuals were women and the purpose was to give them and their voluminous layered dresses the necessary room they needed to sit.

The loveseats of the past offered a more literal design than we see today. They were often just a large chair with two seats usually shaped like an “S”, allowing two people to face each other without actually sitting next to each other.

 3. Voido Rocking Chair

Created by Ron Arad, one of the biggest designers in the international arena, with his masterfully unconventional style, Voido is a rocking chair that looks like a piece of contemporary sculpture, but is made using industrial technology capable of producing large yet light shapes: rotational-moulded polyethylene.

4. Moooi Knitted Chair

The Moooi Knitted Lounge Chair crafted by the visionary designer Nika Zupanc. A true masterpiece that will instantly become the centerpiece of your living space, this larger-than-life lounge chair boasts an impressive design that mimics giant ship ropes made from extra-large 'yarn'. The cozy seating area is enveloped in a luxurious knitted fabric, featuring a quilted diamond pattern that comes in a range of 15 captivating colours. With a chunky basket weave that's skillfully woven around a solid base, the Knitty Lounge Chair delivers a sensory experience like no other.

5. Maarten Baas Clay Chair Bronze

The two chairs follow those of Baas’ Clay series, in which he shapes intentionally naïve forms by hand. From those hand-shaped clay moulds these two chairs were cast.

Baas creates a dislocated image, presenting an informal and playful chair as high art, seen through the visual language of bronze sculpture.

6. Eero Aarnio Bubble Chair

The bubble chair was designed by Finnish furniture designer Eero Aarnio in 1968. It is based on his Ball Chair. The main difference is that the Bubble Chair is attached to the ceiling with a chain, while being made of transparent material which lets the light inside from all directions. The acrylic is heated and blown into a round shape like a soap bubble, within a solid steel frame. It is considered an industrial design classic and to have advanced the usage of plastics in furniture design. The chair is considered modernist or Space Age in design and is often used to symbolise the 1960s period.

 7. The Ball Chair

The Ball Chair was designed in 1963 and debuted at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1966. The chair is one of the most famous and beloved classics of Finnish design and it was the international breakthrough of Eero Aarnio. The Ball Chair can be found in the collections of design museums around the world and it has starred in movies, music videos and magazine covers.

The Ball Chair is made from fibreglass and upholstered with high quality fabrics or lather. There are 12 colour options to choose from.

8. Louis Ghost Chair

A chair inspired by the Louis XV chair, the baroque ideotype, reinterpreted by Philippe Starck to amaze, inspire and beguile. Despite its evanescent and crystalline image, Louis Ghost is stable and strong, collision-proof and capable of withstanding the effects of the weather; and it can be stacked in piles of up to six. A very charismatic product with enormous aesthetic appeal, perfect for every setting, be it domestic or professional.
